Cold-pressed jojoba oil (INCI: Simmondsia Chinensis Seed Oil). Jojoba is technically a liquid wax made of wax esters, not a true oil, and its composition is close to the wax esters found in the skin's own sebum. That makes it light, fast-absorbing and very stable, which is why it is one of the most used carrier oils in face oils, serums, hair care and DIY skincare.

At a glance

Why formulators use it

  • Light, non-greasy feel: Absorbs quickly without a heavy film, so it suits oily, combination and normal skin.
  • Very stable: As a wax ester, jojoba resists going rancid far better than most plant oils, which helps the shelf life of your blends.
  • Versatile base: Works on its own or as the base of face oils, serums, beard oils, roll-ons and cleansing oils.
  • Carrier for essential oils: Dilutes essential oils evenly for skin application.

Suggested usage rates

  • Face oils and serums: up to 100%
  • Beard oils and roll-ons: 50 to 100%
  • Creams and lotions: 2 to 10% of the formula
  • Balms and lip products: 5 to 20%
  • Hair serums and scalp oils: 10 to 50%
  • Oil cleansers: 20 to 50%

How to use it

  • Face: Press 2 to 4 drops into damp skin after cleansing, or add a drop to your moisturiser.
  • Hair: Warm a few drops between your palms and smooth over the ends, or massage into the scalp before washing.
  • Body: Apply after showering while skin is still damp.

Frequently asked questions

Is jojoba oil good for oily or combination skin?
It is one of the most popular choices for oily and combination skin because it is light and absorbs quickly. Patch test first, as every skin is different.

Is jojoba oil actually an oil?
Technically no. It is a liquid wax made of wax esters, which is what makes it so stable.

Why is my jojoba oil cloudy?
Jojoba can go cloudy or partly solid in the cold. Stand the bottle in warm water and it will clear. This does not affect quality.

How long does it last?
Jojoba is one of the most stable carrier oils. Store it tightly closed in a cool, dark place and check the retest date on your COA.

Do you sell bulk jojoba oil?
Yes. 1L to 20L sizes are on our Jojoba Oil Wholesale page.

How to use jojoba oil as a face oil

Jojoba works well on its own, and because it is light and stable it also makes an ideal base for a custom face oil.

  • How much: 2 to 4 drops covers the face and neck. More will just sit on the surface.
  • When: as the last step at night, or under moisturiser in the morning if your skin is dry.
  • Layering: apply water-based serums first, then jojoba, so the oil helps hold that moisture in.

A simple 30ml jojoba face oil blend: 22ml jojoba, 8ml Rosehip Oil and 6 drops of Vitamin E Oil. Store it in a dark dropper bottle and use it within about 6 months, as rosehip is less stable than jojoba.

Pairs well with

Rosehip Oil, Vitamin E Oil, Castor Oil and Vanilla Infused Oil.
