Glycerin

Vegetable-based glycerin (INCI: Glycerin), also spelt glycerine. It is a clear, odourless humectant that draws water into the skin and holds it there. Glycerin is one of the most used ingredients in skincare, found in creams, lotions, serums, toners, soaps and hair care.

Why formulators use it

• Humectant: Draws moisture into the skin and helps keep it there.
• Easy to use: Water-soluble and blends into almost any water-based formula.
• Improves feel: Adds slip and a soft, cushioned finish to creams and lotions.

Suggested usage rates

• Creams and lotions: 2 to 5%
• Serums: 2 to 5%
• Toners and mists: 1 to 3%
• Hair conditioners: 1 to 5%
• Melt and pour or liquid soaps: as directed by your recipe

Above about 10% in leave-on products, glycerin can feel sticky. Most formulas sit between 2 and 5%.

How to use it

• Formulas: Add to the water phase of creams, lotions and serums.
• Hyaluronic acid: Pre-wet Hyaluronic Acid powder with glycerin before adding water to stop clumping.
• Toners: Add 1 to 3% to a hydrosol or water-based toner for extra hydration.

Frequently asked questions

Is glycerin the same as glycerine?
Yes. Glycerin and glycerine are the same ingredient, just different spellings. On a cosmetic label it appears as Glycerin.

Is this glycerin vegetable-based?
Yes. Our glycerin is vegetable-based.

Can I put glycerin straight on my skin?
It is usually diluted. Undiluted glycerin is very sticky, so most people use it at 2 to 5% in a product.

Does glycerin need a preservative?
Pure glycerin does not, but any formula you make with water does.

How glycerin works for skin

Glycerin is a humectant. It attracts water and holds it in the top layers of the skin, which leaves skin feeling softer, smoother and more comfortable. That water can evaporate again, so glycerin works best when something seals it in.

• In a formula: use 2 to 5% in the water phase, alongside an oil phase or an occlusive such as shea butter or squalane.
• In your routine: apply a glycerin toner or serum to damp skin, then follow with a moisturiser or a few drops of oil.
• Quick DIY: stir 2 to 3% glycerin into Aloe Vera Gel for a light, hydrating gel moisturiser.

Above 5% in leave-on products, skin can start to feel tacky, so most formulators stay in the 2 to 5% range.

Storage

Keep tightly closed in a cool, dry place. Glycerin absorbs moisture from the air, so close the bottle straight after use.
